As the debate over the readmission of the Jews to England reached its climax in 1655-1656, Prynne, distinguished already both as lawyer and publicist, proved himself to be the most formidable of all the antagonists of the Jews. Various aspects of his Short Demurrer against readmitting the Jews are analysed here, as well as the invaluable contribution of Prynne's polemic to medieval Anglo-Jewish historio-graphy.
