Ravina and Contemporary Sages
Chronology of Late Babylonian Amoraim
Avinoam Cohen

The central issue of this study is the problem of the identification of the Amora ''Ravina'' in the Babylonian Talmud and the number of Amoraim named ''Ravina'' from the late Babylonian period. This question holds historical and literary importance, and although it was dealt with extensively in the past it has been neglected by scholars of the last generation. All the proposed solutions to the problem to date were founded on traditionally accepted assumptions. The present book sets out to re-examine this issue. The author reveals the flaws in each of the traditional hypotheses and points out the inherent difficulties in all of the solutions hereto proposed. Having re-considered the sugyot from the Babylonian Talmud and the chronology of the Gaonim, the author proposes a new identification and alternative chronology to the Amoraim who bear the name ''Ravina'' and, accordingly, to other Amoraim with whom he came into contact. The author makes use of Talmudic principles, fruit of his own research, and by means of linguistic and literary analysis of Talmudic texts, derives chronological and historical conclusions. The volume includes comprehensive and detailed indices. This book will appeal to Talmudic scholars and students and to the educated reader interested in the world of Talmud.
