Shirat Miqra argues on the basis of solid biblical and literary scholarship that biblical poetics is marked by an unusual tension between the aesthetic and non-aesthetic modes of discourse: it is "Poetry with a Purpose''. The author applies this thesis to a number of biblical books. Many texts from world literature are concurrently discussed.
