A People Alone
Studies in Tractate Avoda Zara
Zvi Arie Steinfeld

This book deals with rabbinic enactments and prohibitions from the Second Temple period, designed to separate Jews from gentiles, from their practices and from their culture, e.g. the prohibitions of eating with a gentile, or partaking of a gentile's bread, oil and cooked foods. The Talmudic passages that deal with these prohibitions are examined from the critical perspective of contemporary research, with the aim of determining the original meaning of the sources, and thus identifying the original enactments and prohibitions, the changes they underwent in the course of time and in different places, and the factors that brought about these changes.
