Jewish Political Tradition throughout the Ages

Jewish Political Tradition throughout the Ages
In Memory of Prof. Daniel Elazar
Edited by: Moshe Helinger
In the past few years there has been a burst of interest in Jewish political tradition, focusing particularly on basic related issues. Even though the subject has been dealt with at length, there is still a lack of discussion dealing with political issues in the light of Jewish tradition. In this volume, distinguished scholars and promising young researchers have come together to create a significant contribution to research on Jewish political tradition, encompassing a wide range of periods and issues reflecting the Jewish political world. This book will appeal to scholars and students from various disciplines dealing with these issues (Talmud, Jewish Law, Jewish Philosophy, Political Science, History, etc.), and to the general public that finds interest in the relevance of the Jewish political world to the central questions concerning today's Jewish and Israeli society. The book is divided into two sections: the first section includes articles on the Bible and Hazal, on the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. The second section deals with important issues on the Israeli agenda: feminism and halakhah, social justice, federalism, solution of conflicts in Israeli society, limitations of war, conscientious disobedience and others. By integrating the historical aspect and the current-day aspect, this book follows the heritage of Prof. Daniel Elazar (Minneapolis, 1934 – Jerusalem, 1999). Prof. Elazar was one of the founders of research of Jewish political tradition and was ahead of his time in his estimation of the significance of Jewish political tradition historically, and in light of the writings of various Jewish philosophers. This book will be the first in a series to be published by Bar-Ilan University Press in which each book will deal with a central political issue arising out of Jewish tradition throughout the ages.
