How can we deal with the spread of addiction in modern Israel and its appearance in social groups that were formerly considered immune: educated, economically established families, religious and ultra-religious sectors? How is it possible to assist addicts, whether they be adolescents or adults, men or women, to return from a life of addiction to one of purpose and activity, direction and meaning? The therapeutic community ''Retorno;'' located in a pastoral countryside setting near Beit Shemesh, offers a unique solution. According to ''Retorno'' (''return'' in Spanish – a symbol of the return to life), addiction is a mistaken attempt to solve existing distress that only intensifies the problem. Retorno, a uniqe, orthodox Jewish therapeutic community that treats religious as well as non-religious addicts and even non-Jews, offers a new, genuine solution that resolves the distress and takes the addict on a personal journey that touches on all aspects of addiction: behavioral, emotional and spiritual. This book tells the story of Retorno in simple, fluent language, describing and focusing on the world of recovering addicts. The book is based on a research project conducted by the Department of Criminology, Bar-Ilan University
