A Split Identity

A Split Identity
The Conflict between the Sacred and the Secular in the Jewish World
Ella Belfer

The subject of this volume is the tension inherent in Judaism between the sacred and the secular. The sources of this tension are analysed, and its manifestations traced from its origins in the biblical tradition to the modern-day public arena. Based on a broad-scope historical survey, the book analyses this duality from three perspectives: the duality of Jewish identity as a nation and a religion, the duality of Jewish existence as a secular-political entity and as a quasi-spiritual Diaspora experience, and the duality of Jewish aspiration for secular-political normalcy and spiritual uniqueness.
